"The artfully wrought nipped-waist dresses in Peter Pilotto’s spring/summer 2014 collection—digitally engineered prints painstakingly overlaid with acid-hued lace, broderie anglaise, and sequins—look fit for a futuristic garden party and prove that Pilotto and his co–creative director,
Christopher De Vos, are indisputable masters of merging cyber savvy with couture sophistication.
So, when Target came knocking, they jumped at the chance to extend their craftiness to more commercial ambitions. Of course, rompers, rash guards, and beach totes for under $100 can’t have the same hand-touched singularity, but Peter Pilotto for Target, launching early February, captures the essence of the mavericks’ aesthetic. The range—nearly 70 items in total—adapts hyperreal floral and geometric graphics to a wardrobe ready-made for a Montauk weekend. “Even if it’s a cheaper price point, it was mutually agreed with Target that the collection had to look very Peter Pilotto,” De Vos says. Whereas their own line features exclusive motifs applied to each garment, for the American chain they found new ways to effect kaleidoscopes. “We chose a couple of prints and used seams to achieve an engineered color silhouette,” Pilotto explains."
